Full Bio
Hussein Alazaat is a multidisciplinary Jordanian designer, Arabic calligraphy artist, and typography instructor known for blending cultural heritage with contemporary design. He graduated from the Amman Graphic Arts School and earned a Graphic Design Diploma from London Art College via distance learning. Inspired by Arabic calligraphy from an early age, Alazaat has dedicated his career to preserving Arab visual heritage through innovative design.
As the founder of ALAZAAT Studio in Amman, he specializes in branding, Arabic typography, public installations, and cultural design projects. His work is grounded in rigorous research, authenticity, and the essence of Arab identity. Through this studio, Alazaat has served diverse clients worldwide, infusing traditional Arabic letterforms into modern brands and visual solutions.
Alazaat has also spearheaded influential community initiatives. In 2012, he co-founded Wajha (Arabic for “facade”), a social design initiative offering free visual identities to small businesses. Wajha turns shopfronts into canvases – applying creative typography and illustration directly onto facades – to beautify streets and spark conversations about design. This initiative has helped popularize a culture of good design in everyday Arab cityscapes, instilling local pride through revitalized storefront branding.
Furthering his cultural mission, Alazaat founded ELHARF, a platform devoted to Arabic typography and design heritage. ELHARF’s headquarters, ELHARF House in Amman, hosts calligraphy workshops, design exhibitions, and educational activities, while ELHARF Publications produces independent books showcasing the art of Arabic book-making. He also established Khazanet.org – “The Beautiful Books Trove” – a digital archive of rare Arabic books and graphic ephemera curated to preserve and share the Arab world’s visual memory.
Alazaat’s creative work extends to large-scale public art and international design forums. His Arabic calligraphy installations have appeared in cultural institutions across the Middle East – from Jordan’s Darat Al Funun in Amman to prominent exhibitions in the Gulf. He handled the typography for Jordan’s latest banknotes and led high-profile branding projects like the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the visual identity for historic downtown of Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has shared his expertise through lectures and workshops at universities and conferences worldwide. Through all these endeavors, he exemplifies a commitment to connecting Arab heritage with contemporary visual culture, leaving a lasting intellectual, cultural, and artistic impact on the region’s design landscape.
